Fire wall effects
Got to say it: Having Twitter and Youtube blocked by the Great Fire Wall of China sure drives up my blogging frequency....
I do feel for my Chinese academic colleagues who want to do research on social media, though.

I have lived in countries where they block certain things, but there're always work arounds.
The want for social media would be all the more greater if they're blocked. Imagine flickr being blocked.

Expats in China have been used to playing the cat 'n mouse game with getting around the Great firewall of China by using proxies and tunnelling in order to keep in touch with friends and collegues in other countries not affected by the GFoC. Chinese people prefer the glocalized "copy to China" versions of major western web sites, which of course cencored (actually mostly self cencored).
(writing from Shanghai, not blocking your site must have been an omission)
